Thatcham schoolgirl's poem published

Jemima Unsworth’s prose, entitled Holiday Poem, has been published in an ebook of winning and shortlisted entries from the 2014 National Association for Able Children in Education poetry competition.
The 14-year-old said that she penned the poem after returning from a family holiday in Orlando, Florida, where she was struck by the different attitudes and lifestyles that people in the sunshine state had from people in Britain.

,” the poem reads, which Jemima said expresses how events can exceed your expectations.
She said that it took her about an hour-and-a-half to write the poem, which was later drafted and adapted with help from her English teacher Pippa Ault, who recommended that it be entered into the contest.
Jemima’s entry was one of 15 shortlisted from more than 1,000 poems received by the judging panel, including
children’s author Anne Fine OBE.
Jemima said that she was thrilled to receive such a wonderful accolade. “I was quite surprised. I have a love of English but I did not expect such positive feedback,” she said.
“I don’t write poems often but I might consider writing more now that I have had this feedback. I didn’t think my love for English and ability to write was at this level.”
The Year 10 pupil said that her friends and family were very impressed with her acheivement.
“They were surprised but in a positive way,” she said.
The headmaster of Kennet School, Paul Dick, said: “I am immensely proud of Jemima’s success. She is a very matter-of-fact and modest young lady who has a real strength in writing, her teachers report.
“To be chosen by NACE, the organisation which champions the more able, is a huge achievement and a reflection of
her extraordinary talent.
"It is no surprise that the same young lady was on the stage last week, as the Ghost of Christmas Present, in our superb production of A Christmas Carol. She is a great talent, developing all the while.”
