Thatcham student to embark on charity cycle challenge

Former Kennet School pupil will ride from York to Thatcham

A THATCHAM man will be cycling more than 200 miles in a fundraising charity effort.

Ryan Wilson aims to cycle the 226 miles from York University to Thatcham over a maximum of three days at the end of June.

The former Kennet School pupil, who is studying business management at York, will be riding solo and camping two nights on the road.

The 20-year-old said that he was on track for the challenge.

Mr Wilson said that he had wanted to get back in the saddle after taking up other sports at university and decided a cycle challenge was the best way to achieve this.

Saying that he liked to push himself, Mr Wilson added that he was used to cycling long distances, often completing 60-80 miles in a day, so the average 76 miles he would be pedalling every day for his fundraising ride was achievable.

He has set himself a target of raising £500 for Dreams Come True, a charity that grants wishes for young people aged between two and 21 with serious and life-limiting conditions.

Mr Wilson said that the charity was close to his heart as his mother, Judy Wilson, is a welfare assistant who works with physically disabled children, some of whom have life-limiting conditions, at Kennet School.

Mrs Wilson said that she was worried, excited and proud of her son for undertaking his fundraising mission which he intends to embark on on June 22.
