Thatcham to bloom for international campaign

Rotary Club plants thousands of crocus corms

THATCHAM Rotary Club is going through a purple patch as part of a national campaign.

Club members have been planting more than 1,500 crocus corms on the grass verge in front of the Henwick Worthy Sports Ground.

The mayor of Thatcham, Ellen Crumley, joined in the planting, which is taking place across the UK.

The project is part of an International Rotary campaign spanning 30 years to eradicate polio from the planet. The purple croci symbolise the colour of the dye used to dip a vaccinated child’s finger in.

Other sites around Thatcham will be planted with a total of 5,000 flowers and signs will be erected explaining the campaign in greater detail close to the blooms.

President elect of Thatcham Rotary Club, Ray Stowell, thanked Mrs Crumly and Thatcham Town Council for their support and encouragement.

He added that the club was looking forward to seeing the plants bloom in all their glory in spring next year
