Why is Thatcham Town Council considering redesigning its logo?
A slightly different item was up for debate at Thatcham Town Council’s finance and general purposes committee meeting on Tuesday, April 28.
Councillors considered a proposal forwarded by the Community Engagement Working Party for a phased removal of certain details in the town council’s logo after this group was contacted by a resident suggesting it no longer aligned with modern sensibilities.
But what details exactly? The hook and fly used to lure the trout, of course.
Councillor Mark Lillycrop (Lib Dem, Thatcham West) was first to speak, suggesting any such removal should be done in a way that doesn’t embarrass any organisations which use similar logos inspired by the council’s own.
Owen Jeffery (Lib Dem, Thatcham Central) agreed, but reminded councillors entirely new logos had been considered in the past and suggested members of the community should be considered if this line was pursued.
Iain Cottingham (Lib Dem, Thatcham Central), referring to Thatcham Cricket Club, said: “That logo is on our shirts and probably numerous organisations which would then have an indirect cost.”
Chairman Mike Cole (Lib Dem, Thatcham North East) said any discussions to alter the town council’s logo were significant and recommended the decision be put forward to full council.
Town council leader Tom McCann (Lib Dem, Thatcham Centre) replied: “I agree with that hook, line and sinker.”
The committee resolved to refer the matter to the full council.
