Thatcham Town Council to appoint a leader and deputy leader
Town councillor, Owen Jeffery (Lib Dem, Thatcham South and Crookham), said that he was proposing the motion for a "constitutional tidy up" and said that it would mean that the mayor's civic role would be clearly defined.
He said: "The intention is to free up the mayor to be our civic representation without having the political side of it tying him or her down.
"By creating a position of leader of the council, it makes it very clear the direction of the council."
The leader (and deputy) would be able to provide political leadership to the council, would liaise between the clerk and the council in indicating priorities, would be responsible for working with other councillors and would be the first point of contact for the clerk when a political or policy response was needed.
The leader and deputy leader will be appointed at the second part of the annual town council meeting on May, 21.
