Thatcham's Taceham House to be renamed

Residents' being asked to come up with new name for derelict site

THE name of Taceham House in Thatcham could be consigned to the town’s history books as residents are being asked to help name its replacement.

Sovereign Housing Association is demolishing the former temporary housing site in The Haywards. It will be replaced with 10 homes - a mixture of houses and flats - which will be available to local people at an affordable rent.

The new building is in need of a new name and local people are being asked for suggestions.

Taceham House was used as temporary accommodation for local residents until 2009 when it became in need of repair and was no longer suitable to house people. It has been sitting empty ever since.

West Berkshire Council sold the derelict building to Sovereign for £1 earlier this year following the completion of the prolonged deal.

Encouraging residents to submit their suggestions, the council’s member for housing, Hilary Cole (Con, Chieveley) said: "This new accommodation will be a real asset for the town and for the local people waiting for affordable housing.

"As a community asset we'd love to know what everyone thinks it should be called and I hope that people won't be shy about coming forward to tell us about the people and places in Thatcham's history that matter to them."
