The Big Match nets £70,000 for charity
The Big Match saw the likes of former Liverpool star Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock and former Tottenham Hotspur legend Ossie Ardiles line up with members of the public in aid of two charities, The Brain Tumour Charity and Action for Children.
TV personality Suzanne Shaw, comedian Bobby Davro and X Factor finalist Danyl Johnson also took part in the day’s events, while youngsters had the opportunity to take a penalty against former England and Arsenal footballer David Seaman.
The after party – Extra Time – was headlined by singer Gareth Gates and attended by Sir John Madejski.
Since it started in 2012, The Big Match has raised about £200,000.
It was the brainchild of Reading man Neil Humphries, who lost his father to a brain tumour in January 2012. It is co-sponsored by Ridgeway Volkswagen Newbury, the general manager of which is Craig Clapham, a close friend of Mr Humphries.
Mr Clapham said: “For me the highlight of the day was seeing the smiles on the faces of the children when they got to take a penalty against David Seaman.
“It was a fantastic day all round.”
The Action for Children team, who won last year’s match 4-2, emerged victorious once again, winning the game 5-3.
