National president of club hails "fantastic work"

THE Downs School was praised for its work in developing the speaking skills of young people at the recent Swindon Speakers Club annual dinner.

The national president, William Wallace, praised the Compton school for its “fantastic work” and said it had provided a national template for other schools to follow.

The National Brian Driscoll Trophy was awarded to the club recently, which recognised the work done at the school through its lunchtime speakers club.

Club member Fiona Brennan-Scott, who facilitates the group for the school, said: “I am truly humbled by receiving this award.

“I never realised in approaching Chris Prosser, our headteacher, and John McGhee [Swindon club education officer] to start a club in the school that it would become a national phenomenon and receive such recognition.”
