The George rings the changes

A spokeswoman for Swindon-based owners Arkell’s Brewery, Nicky Godding, revealed major refurbishment was on the way.
In January this year it was announced that Jan Garrett, who had been at the watering hole at the intersection of the High Street and Newbury Road since March, 2005, had moved on.
New licensee Dave Howells took over, helped by his 22-year-old niece, Karianne.
The pub is currently closed and a notice in the window from Mr Howells states: “We would like to thank all patrons in the short time we’ve been here.”
Ms Godding said: “The George is undergoing a vast refurbishment with new entrances, kitchen and patio. There will also be a great new team running it when it re-opens in September.
“Arkell’s invests in a rolling programme of investment and improvement and it happens to be The George’s turn. It hasn’t been renovated in quite a while. The brewery is very excited about it and we hope the village will be, too.”
