Mrs Farris – who voted against a ceasefire in November - told the foreign secretary there is an imperative need for humanitarian aid and a focus on a permanent political settlement in the region.

She said: “I understand of course the depth of feeling and the horror of the 7 October events, but however remote it appears, a two-state solution is the only one that can eventually bring security to Israel and autonomy to the Palestinian people.

“I believe that this can be achieved, it almost was once before under the Oslo Accords, with the intense involvement and support of partner states in the region and beyond.”

A day after her visit, Mr Cameron appeared before the Foreign Affairs Select Committee of MPs in Parliament where he reiterated Israel’s right to defend itself.

But he also called for a significant increase in aid in Gaza.

He told the committee that around 90 per cent of Gazans are currently getting less than one meal a day.

He said: “We are at 150 trucks a day getting into Gaza, we need to be closer to 500.

“Every day that we’re not closer to 500, we’re going to have more people going hungry, we’re going to have more people getting disease, there is a danger of there being real widespread hunger.”
