The Hungerford Nursery: still running, 80 years on!
IT was 1940; war was raging and Winston Churchill made his famous 'fight them on the beaches' speech in the year The Hungerford Nursery School was founded.
Eighty years on, the school's Shoal of Friends celebrated the remarkable anniversary with a day of fun and celebration on Saturday, June 25.
One of the teachers, Hannah Harper, came up with the 5k 'fun run' idea.
And on a separate route there was a ‘Family Quest’ for children and their families.
Nursery staff and governors took an active part in the organising and marshalling of the event.
For the Family Quest, nursery staff acting as marshals were in fancy dress along the route.
Children had ‘passports’ to get stamped, gathered clues and solved a puzzle.
Medals for both events were created by nursery staff member, Tessa Brown, who also made the wonderful celebration cake.
The celebrations also included a family picnic in The Croft Field.
Newbury MP Laura Farris joined in and cut the celebration cake alongside district councillors and civic dignitaries, including Constable of the Town & Manor, Peter Joseph.
The event raised a whopping £1,576.89 for school funds and headteacher Suzanne Taylor said she would like to thank all those who organised or contributed to make the day so memorable.
In conjunction with the event, staff and governors took on a successful GoFundMe challenge to complete a total of 80 miles between them – and one staff member, Luan Pennington, achieved it individually.
