Newburytoday.co.uk reader, Jeff Coultas, has submitted these photos of water voles in Hungerford

AS BRITISH Waterways looks to protect water vole habitats near Hungerford, one Newburytoday.co.uk reader has been out snapping the rodents himself.

Last week, the Newbury Weekly News reported that British Waterways had been re-using 200-year-old techniques as part of a £600,000 project to protect water vole habitats while dredging and rebuilding the embankment of the Kennet and Avon Canal near Hungerford.

And this week, Jeff Coultas has captured these images of water voles in their natural habitat near Hungerford.

Nationally, the number of water voles is declining rapidly with habitat destruction and predators to blame, but British Waterways ecologist, Oda Dijksterhuis, said the Kennet and Avon Canal was a real stronghold for water voles, adding that this was why British Waterways was investing in the project.
