The Royals are going up!
Mikele Leigertwood’s 81st minute goal was enough to gain a 1-0 victory for the Royals against Nottingham Forest at the Madejski Stadium last night, and in the process secured promotion to the top flight.
Thousands of Royals fans swarmed the pitch as the final whistle was blown, with many kissing the turf and goalposts in front of the north stand where Leigertwood’s promotion winning goal was scored.
Reading players were held aloft by the crowd, who had packed into a sell-out Madejski Stadium last night.
Those fans will now be hoping their idols can finish the Championship title with a win at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, although other results will have to go their way.
It is only the second time Reading has made it to the top flight of English football; they first secured promotion to the Premier League after a record breaking season in 2005/06.
After finishing just one point outside a European place in their first season in the Premier League, the Royals were relegated on goal difference in 2007/08 campaign.
Reading have twice made the playoffs since that relegation, with more than 30,000 loyal Royals travelling to Wembley last May, only to see their team beaten 4-2 by Swansea City.
Royals’ fans will be hoping their side can become a permanent fixture in the Premier League, with Russian investor Anton Zingarevich finalising a takeover at the club from long-term chairman John Madejski, who is likely to remain as chairman of the club.
