The wedding party starts in Compton

Landlady of The Compton Swan makes a royal wedding cake made from ginger bread, sweets and jelly to mark the special day

VILLAGERS in Compton are celebrating the royal wedding with a pint of ale at the local pub's beer festival, topped off with a slice of royal wedding cake made by the landlady.

Regulars turned up at The Compton Swan this morning to watch the ceremony on plasma screens.

Villagers were treated to glasses of champagne and plastic tiaras were handed out to the ladies and crowns to the men to get everyone in the royal wedding spirit.

Co-owner of the pub, Penelope Sexton, also created a royal wedding cake made of ginger bread, sweets and jelly.

She said: “It's taken about fours hours to make, spread over five days. Everything you see on the cake can be eaten, including the ducks which are made of marzipan.”

The landlady, who also bought royal wedding fake nails to wear for the occasion, explained what the pub has planned for the rest of the day.

She said: “We've got lots of children in the village so there's a children's party starting at 3pm, with a prince and princess fancy dress party at 5pm.

“We also have a beer festival from 3pm until midnight.”

The festival will be self service with a choice of more than ten different beers, ales and ciders from local breweries such as West Berkshire Brewery, Loddon Brewery and Butts Brewery.
