This way to the "sation", according to town centre monolith
Did you spot the spelling mistake? Eagle-eyed Chieveley resident Joyce Gustard did as she was reading one of the nine 8ft information monoliths in Newbury town centre.
According to the Newbury Business Improvement District, the mistake on the monolith in Northbrook Street, opposite Costa Coffee, will be rectified in the second phase of the tourism project.
Joyce Gustard was a supporter of the project to provide better signposting around the town when it was announced last year, particularly as she hoped it would highlight the “under-used” canal area.
However, speaking this week, she said: “I would not have been so enthusiastic if I had realised that there would be a spelling mistake on them. This does not give a favourable impression of the town.”
Office and events manager at the BID, Suzanne Young, said: “It’s being resolved when we do the next phase, sometime this year, before Christmas.
“The beauty of them is that they are very easy to change – that’s why we chose them.”
She added that the BID had not been made aware of any other mistakes on any of the other monoliths.
The second phase will see 15 fingerposts placed around the town.
The way-finding project, which in total will cost £102,000, highlights key areas, such as the racecourse and Market Place, as well as detailing different aspects of the town’s history.
