Thousands raised by thousands of visitors at village fete

The event saw thousands of people descend on Yattendon’s village centre to enjoy time-honoured classics such as morris dancing, a bouncy castle and a Punch and Judy puppet display in the unusual bank holiday sunshine.
The event was opened by Lord Iliffe who then went on to judge the polished classic and vintage vehicles, with a 1920 model T Ford named as the winning entrant.
Children from Yattendon Primary School continued in traditional mode by putting on a display of maypole dancing, and also enjoyed the village’s Christmas tree- and wellie-throwing contest.
Bargain hunters had a chance to rummage through the

bric-a-brac stalls and, for refreshment, there was local beer and a hog roast, consumed to the strains of a steel band.
The chairman of the fete committee, Roger Sansom, said that it had been a fantastic day – probably the best they had had for years – with an estimated 4,000 people coming through the gate.
Even the supply of Pimms ran out.
Mr Sansom said: “The best thing for us was that there were so many people there.
"Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves and all the stalls were kept busy. The weather certainly helped – the ice-cream man did very well.”
Mr Sansom said that the event had raised an estimated £15,000 for the Yattendon and Frilsham Sports and Social Trust, which provides funds for local groups and charities.
