Three roads in Newbury are to get the 20 is plenty treatment.

The speed limit will be reduced on Argyle Road, Derby Road and Hampton Road after a public consultation on the matter.

Only 19 people responded to that, with 14 in favour.

The single objection that was received said the reduced speed limit should also cover other nearby roads, including Bartholomew Street and Pound Street.

A wider area should be considered rather than this “piecemeal” approach.

Around 20 new speed limit signs will go up.

The project is funded from the existing council capital budget and is expected to cost approximately £2,000.

There is an ongoing financial cost in respect of the maintenance of speed limit signing, noting that 30mph limits do not generally require “repeater” signs, but 20mph limits do.

Traffic signs have a long life and will not need wholesale replacement for many years, but in order for a speed limit to be legally enforceable all signs within the limit need to be present and correct.

West Berkshire Council has powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to set the speed limits on the roads for which it is responsible.

In order to be legally enforceable, speed limits require a legal order to be made

The council says there is clear evidence of the effect of reducing traffic speeds on the reduction of collisions and casualties, as collision frequency is lower at lower speeds, and where collisions do occur, there is a lower risk of fatal injury.
