Jon Murby, crew manager of white watch at Tilehurst Fire Station, said one pump was called at 4pm to Langley Hill, after the engine of a mini started smoking whilst the vehicle was stationary at traffic lights.
Two women in the car turned off the engine and got out of the car, before alerting the fire service.
“There was lots of smoke, but it was a very small fire,” said Mr Murby.
Firefighters moved the car off the road and left the scene at 4.30pm.
