Tomorrow's World presenter named as Theale headteacher
David Bromfield was selected by the school governors for the permanent position, after serving as interim headteacher since January.
The former BBC radio and television presenter has 22 years of experience in education, including eight years in senior leadership, and has a national professional qualification for headship in addition to a masters degree in science education from King’s College London.
He left teaching after winning a BBC talent search competition in 2000, fulfilling a childhood ambition to become a
presenter.
Writing in
in 2011, Mr Bromfield said that in the '70s he had wanted to be on the science program, but thought that his ethnicity would hold him back.
Wanting to continue his passion for education, he became a science and IT teacher, until his dream was realised when he beat 11,000 other applications in the nationwide search.
Speaking of his appointment at Theale Green, Mr Bromfield said: “I am delighted to have been appointed. I have been made to feel very welcome by the students, staff, Governing Body and the Local Authority at Theale Green.
“I am encouraged by their commitment to improvement and I am confident that by working together we can overcome any challenges and secure significant progress.”
The school was placed in special measures in October after Ofsted inspectors judged that the school had not improved since the previous report in 2011.
In his most recent role as principal of Manchester Academy, Mr Bromfield’s leadership resulted in a good Ofsted rating.
Theale Green has also received confirmation over its plans to open as an academy in September; in sponsorship with Bradfield College.
Chair of the governors at Theale Green, Hamish Stout, said with the the school’s sponsored academy status and the appointment of a permanent headteacher, the key remaining building blocks were in place to secure the rapid improvements required to move Theale Green Community School back to a status of an educational establishment highly valued by parents, students and the local community.
