Tough choice for judges but the chocolate mousse wins it for young chef
The West Berkshire round of the Young Chef competition was hosted by Thatcham Rotary Club at Newbury College.
Jamie Fiddler (pictured) impressed the judges – the executive chef at the Vineyard at Stockcross, Daniel Galmiche, local caterer Ian Alexander, and Frank de Mengel, a teacher in the catering department at the college – with his three-course menu of a mushroom starter, spaghetti with mussels, accompanied by home-made bread, and a chocolate mousse, which the judges said was the dish of the day.
As part of the contest, entrants had to provide full costing details for their meals, a work plans and a list of ingredients.
Jamie Fiddler will now battle it out with other young chefs from around the county at the next heat, to be held at High Wycombe on Saturday.
Ron Howard from Thatcham Rotary Club said that the competition had been of a very high standard.
He added that he had been impressed by the maturity and planning skills displayed by the contestants and thanked everyone for helping to make the competition such a success.
