Gen Sir Mike Jackson’s coffin travels through Hungerford before his funeral is held




Hungerford bid a final farewell to Gen Sir Mike Jackson today (Wednesday).

The former head of the British Army died at the age of 80 on Tuesday, October 15, surrounded by his family.

His coffin was taken through the town, with family, friends and dignitaries following behind.

It stopped outside the war memorial on Bridge Street, where members of the Royal British Legion lowered the flag.

Gen Sir Mike had lived in the town for many years, playing an integral role in many events, including Remembrance Day parades and the 80th anniversary of D-Day commemorations.

The father-of-three led the Army during the allied invasion of Iraq in 2003 after serving in Northern Ireland and Bosnia.

In an earlier tribute to Gen Sir Mike, known as ‘Jacko’, Hungerford Town Council said: “It has been our absolute pleasure and privilege to welcome him to many of the town’s events, in particular, our Remembrance services and parades.

“Gen Sir Mike Jackson was a firebrand of the British Army with a career spanning 40 years.

“He was much loved by all who had the honour to serve under his command and will be greatly missed by many and long remembered.”
