Town council is back from the brink

Volunteers have come forward to serve community of Hungerford

HUNGERFORD town council is back to almost full strength after the co-option of new councillors.

Last month (May) new town mayor Martin Crane appealed to residents to help serve their community on a dwindling council.

During the recent elections, only seven councillors came forward for 15 seats.

Mr Crane said then: “This is a great opportunity for people to give a few hours each month to build their local community in a positive manner.”

The problem was compounded with the subsequent, sudden resignation of former town mayor Peter Harries.

Following the request for more volunteers to join the town council, the council has secured eight more Councillors to raise their team to 14.

The new councillors are: Amy Pearson; Charlotte Podger; Jan Giggins; Angus Campbell; Martyn Hopkins; Richard Hudson; Roger Thompson and Stephen Colloff.

Mr Crane said: “They will bring both youth and experience to face the challenges of the next year. Both Amy and Charlotte are in their late teens and their enthusiasm and passion for the town was a deciding factor in their selection.

“The new council has now gained new faces with a spectrum of vision, experience and a sense of determination to reach out to all sectors and ages of Hungerford.”

The new recruits join the existing councillors Dennis Benneyworth, Mr Crane, Jean Hutchings, David Liddiard, Rupert Thompson and Margaret Wilson.
