Town gearing up for seventh Bayer 10k race

Among them will be Bayer IT service desk team leader Dan Lagoy from Newbury, who is planning to run the event dressed as Captain America on behalf of Help for Heroes.
Mr Lagoy said: “Help for Heroes provides invaluable physical, psychological and financial support to the men and women of the British armed forces who have suffered life-changing injuries in the line of duty, as well as much needed support to their families. I am honoured to be allowed to run on their behalf.”
New Yorker Mr Lagoy was stationed at RAF Greenham Common from 1984 to 1987 in the US Air Force, when he met his future wife. He has lived in Newbury since 1992.

For Jenny Kitchen, also from Newbury, the event will mark her 1,000th-race mile.
The 48-year-old former pupil of St Nicolas’ and St Bartholomew’s schools took up running eight years ago.
Clare King will be running to raise money for children’s cancer charity CLIC to help her young nephew Ben who has leukaemia.
He is currently ill in hospital and Ms King has so far raised more than £8,000.

A guest appearance will be made by the Bayer Rock Choir, which is planning a few rousing numbers to raise energy levels before the race starts.
The routes for under-16s and under-11s will take them up Northbrook Street and round Parkway shopping centre before returning to the Market Place.
Then, at 10.15am the 10k runners will set off, racing up Northbrook Street on a route that also takes in Speen Lane, the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath and West Mills before retuning to Market Place via Craven Road.
The event is expected to generate thousands for the race’s nominated charity, Volunteer Centre West Berkshire, as well as co-organiser, Newbury Athletic Club, and scores of charities dear to competitors’ own hearts.
Entries to the race closed yesterday (Wednesday), but the organisers would still like to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer to help on raceday.
Anyone who can assist is asked to use the e-mail address: newbury10kvolunteer@gmail.
