Traffic builds in central Newbury as road closes for roadworks
Traffic is building up in central Newbury as two roads close for roadworks.
Kings Road, from its junction with Boundary Road to its junction with Gordons Road, was scheduled to close today (Wednesday, May 31) and tomorrow (Thursday, June 1).
Boundary Road bridge has now been opened for two way traffic.
Later in the week Boundary Road, from its junction with Railway Road to its junction with Kings Road, will close.
This closure is expected to be in place from Friday, June 2, to Sunday, June 4.
Traffic is currently moving slowly on Mill Lane, Bone Lane and the B3421 as motorists make their way around the closure.
It is not the first time that closures around these roads have brought the town centre to a standstill.
In August last year, police were forced to close a road to ensure that emergency vehicles could get in and out of the police station, after reports of queues of up to an hour.
The roadworks were suspended after a few days due to the chaos caused.
Access to Hambridge Road will be via Mill Lane (Non HGV traffic), and its junction with A4 (Benham Hill).
HGVs will be required to enter and exit Hambridge Road via its junction with A4 Benham Hill/London Road.
Access to the southern section of Boundary Road will be via the A339, Greenham Road and Stroud Green as far as the railway bridge.
For those residents living within the Kings Road closure, there will be the suspension of the one-way system to allow entry and exit to their properties.
Where appropriate, it may be necessary to suspend both resident and public parking to improve two-way traffic flow.
Parking within the works area may well be suspended.
The purpose of these upcoming closures is for the connection of services and resurfacing works.
