Traffic chaos on A4 this morning due to failing lights at Robin Hood
The traffic lights for vehicles approaching from Thatcham on the A4 are stuck permanently on red and reports from those involved state this has been the case since before 7.15am.
The lights from some of the other junctions are stuck on green.
One Thatcham resident said to reporter Ellis Barker at 9.50am: "I have given up for now and come home.
"I left home in Ashman Road, Thatcham, at 8.30am to go to Kiln Road and because the traffic was backed up I thought I would go up Ashmore Green and down Stoney Lane.
"Unfortunately, so did a wagon and because the traffic coming the other way had no where to go we all had to back up and turn around.
"I then tried Fishers Lane to find that was backed up, by this time I was worried I would run out of petrol so I turned round, got petrol [and have] come home for an hour before trying again."
One lady who was travelling from Thatcham reported that it took over an hour to travel from the Hambridge Road to Faraday Road junctions.
Another said it had taken an hour to get from Kennet Heath to Turnpike Road.
The traffic is currently backed up beyond the Thathcam Broadway, according to reports.
A spokesman for Thames Valley Police, James Williams, confirmed that the incident had been reported to them at 7.15am and they had referred the incident to West Berkshire Council.
The council is yet to confirm what action is being taken.
A broken down car on Floral Way, Thatcham, is adding further congestion to those trying to avoid the jams.
Delays are also being caused to bus services. Reading Buses took to social media this morning to warn users that Jet Black services were running with 50-minute delays and apologised for any inconvenience caused.
The failing lights are causing congestion to a number of other roads, includign Bowling Green Road and Turnpike Road (pictured).
A spokeswoman for West Berkshire Council, Peta Stoddart-Crompton, said at 9.45am: “A fault developed on the controls on the southern side of the Robin Hood roundabout, which became stuck on red this morning (Fri).
"The fault was reported to Siemens [engineers] at 7.30am, who maintain the traffic lights.
"They have listed it as a priority and the engineer, who lives a distance away, is en route."
