Traffic jams on A339 between Newbury and Basingstoke set to continue after manhole collapses

LONG tailbacks of traffic on the A339 between Newbury and Basingstoke are set to continue this evening (Wed) and tomorrow (Thurs), after a manhole collapsed near Kingsclere.
Hampshire County Council has confirmed the manhole, on the A339 southbound, just outside Kingsclere, belonged to Vodafone, with temporary traffic lights erected this morning by the county council as a safety precaution, after the manhole collapsed earlier today (Wed).
The temporary traffic lights caused delays of half an hour in both directions on the A339 during this morning's rush hour (Wed).
The queues were reportedly stretching southbound from near The Star Inn at Kingsclere, to The Swan Inn roundabout at Newtown.
Northbound, the traffic was this morning queuing from Kingsclere back to past the Wolverton junction.
The manhole was due to be inspected tomorrow (Thurs).
Drivers should seek alternative routes.
