Queuing traffic continues across Newbury after closures for gas leak repairs and sub-zero weather

Traffic queues are continuing today (Wednesday) on a number of town centre roads following on from yesterday's congestion, as icy conditions and road closures cause problems for motorists.

The junction of Kings Road/Boundary Road and Hambridge Road in Newbury is currently shut after reports of a suspected gas pipe leak.

According to the AA, traffic is heavy on all surrounding roads including the A339, the Andover Road, Greenham Road, the A4 London Road, Pinchington Lane, Bartholomew Street and Market Street.

SGN has implemented a full road closure at the busy junction and said it expects it will remain closed for around seven to 10 days.

The closure means that the planned roadworks initially scheduled for Cognition Land and Water to carry out highway and drainage improvements for the Sterling Cables site, meant to start on Monday morning, will not now take place until after the gas works are complete.

West Berkshire Council said the closure was necessary "due to the position of the pipe in the road".

It apologised for the inconvenience caused by the works.
