Train fare increases come into effect today (Friday)

Regulated rail fares, including season tickets, have risen by 2.5 per cent - meaning a yearly ticket from Newbury to London Paddington has gone from £4,440 last year to £4,548 this year.
The cost of an annual season ticket from Thatcham to London has increased by £100 - from £4,088 in 2014 to £4,188 in 2015.
Commuters travelling from Hungerford to the capital will now have to fork out £4,764 instead of £4,652.
Fares were originally meant to rise by 3.5 per cent - inflation plus one per cent - but for 2014 and 2015, the Chancellor of the Exchequer has limited fares rises to RPI inflation only, meaning fares have risen by 2.5 percent this year.
The Campaign for Better Transport says that fares have increased around 4 times faster than average wages over the course of the current Parliament.
Its chief executive, Stephen Joseph said: “While it is welcome that fare increases are lower than previous years it comes at a time where wages are not increasing at anything like the rate train fares are.
“It is likely to put people off as it will make it much more difficult to be able to afford to travel, particularly on longer routes such as West Berkshire to London.”
