Train hits tree outside Whitchurch

Commuters were left shocked after hearing a loud bang, as the train on which they were travelling from London Waterloo came to an emergency stop.
Wash Common resident Chris Horner, who had to take the service after most trains from London Paddington to Newbury were cancelled, said that it felt like something had hit the train and the window by which he was sitting cracked on the impact.
The 40-year-old said: "It was quite scary. We had no idea what had happened. A guard came along to tell passengers that we had hit a tree, although it felt like something had actually hit the train.
"We had to wait about 25 minutes while the driver checked to see whether we had been derailed, and if the train was too damaged to continue.
"We were told that the train could make it to the station but could only travel at a reduced speed.
"When I got off the train, I was shocked to see the extent of the damage. The front of the train was badly damaged, and there were dents in the side and windows broken. You could see branches sticking out from the undercarriage and wheels."
The incident happened at about 7pm. About an hour later South West Trains tweeted: "The line is open again at Whitchurch and delays of 30 minutes expected until 9pm."
A later tweet, posted at 9.17pm, read: "Trees are currently blocking lines at Surbiton, Moreton, Whitchurch, and Petersfield."
The firm has since advised people not to travel unless it is absolutely necessary, as trees on the line were affecting routes into Hampshire.
It added that another tree had fallen near Whitchurch and the line would remain blocked until further notice.
