Police move swiftly to evict group of caravans from Millennium Green in East Ilsley

A GROUP of travellers that set up camp on the Millenium Green in East Ilsley on Monday lunchtime were swiftly moved on by Thames Valley Police.

The same group of 24 vehicles and 19 caravans had earlier been moved on from Newbury showground.

The landlord of the Swan Pub in East Ilsley, Richard Vellender, said: “We are very grateful to the police for sorting this problem out so quickly. There was quite a large police presence to deal with any potential trouble.

“All that I know is that they (the travellers) were evicted from Newbury showground and within 10 minutes they had broken into the green.”

He added that the green was gated and had been padlocked, but would not speculate on the amount of damage caused.

But he added: "I was informed that children had been running around people's gardens," he said.

Thames Valley Police confirmed that they moved the travellers from the site.

Spokeswoman Lucy Billen said: "AT 11am police were called to Millennium Green in East Ilsley. There were a large number of travellers on a site that would normally be locked."

She confirmed that most of the vehicles had left the site by 2pm.

Shortly after the group had been moved on from the green by police, Newbury Weekly News received reports of a group of travellers driving through Chieveley.

As of 4pm yesterday (Monday), only one caravan was still left on the site.
