Splinter group of caravans moved on from various sites in West Berkshire has now camped on Vodafone site

A GROUP of travellers are currently (Tuesday 2pm) camped on the Vodafone site in Canal View Road off Hambridge Lane, Newbury.

Thames Valley Police have confirmed that they were made aware of the travellers by 11.34am this morning, although eye-witnesses said that the group arrived yesterday evening.

The police have also said that the group of about six caravans may have splintered off from a much larger group which had been moved on from private land in East Ilsley yesterday.

Vodafone spokeswoman Jo Baker confirmed that the travellers were on their part of the site and said: “We are aware of a group of travellers camping on our site and we are working with the various authorities to get them to move as soon as possible.

“We have increased the security on the site and are doing everything we can to keep our employees safe.”

Police were first notified of the presence of the travellers by Newbury Agricultural Society after they set up camp on Newbury Showground.

A group of about 20 caravans were present on the site from Sunday evening to midday Monday.

There have also been reports of travellers being moved on from the parking area of the B&Q store in London Road, Newbury.

Apart from a single lock being broken at the site in East Ilsley, there have been no reports of damage to property.
