Roads blocked across West Berkshire as bad weather takes its toll

There is traffic chaos across West Berkshire this morning as the district deals with a deluge of rain and strong winds.

Several roads across the district, particularly on the western side, have been blocked by fallen trees.

The A4 between Newbury and Hungerford is partially blocked after a tree and a roof were blown on to the road.

A tree fell across the A4 near Halfway, causing partial delays as vehicles mounted the verge to pass.

A roof from a barn has blown across the road near Kintbury.

Several West Berkshire villages are also reporting that roads have been blocked by fallen trees, including Chaddleworth, where a tree has also fallen across Spray Lane.

In Chieveley, Down End lane is blocked due to a fallen tree, and Blandys Hill between Inkpen and Kintbury is also blocked due to a large branch.

There are reported power outages along the A4, and near Boxford and Brightwalton due to the bad weather.

Scottish and Southern Electrical Networks (SSE) hopes to have power restored by 12.30pm.

There are also reports of standing water on Burys Bank Road towards the golf course and Crookham Hill.

Roads from Compton to Newbury are covered in broken branches and leaves, while there is also a tree down in Hampstead Norreys.

In Brightwalton, the road from the top of Pudding Lane down to the Holt is blocked due to fallen trees.

Thames Valley Police has requested people only call 999 in an emergency.

It said: "Please take care on the roads this morning due to the heavy rainfall and windy conditions overnight.

"We are receiving lots of reports that trees have fallen down, causing obstructions on the roads and there is also standing water in many places.

"Please only call 999 in an emergency.

"For incidents that are not an emergency, you can report online at https://orlo.co.uk/smFS9.
