Tree stump in Castle Grove, Newbury, to be retained to support wildlife

A tree that is being felled in Newbury will not be completely removed in order to support other wildlife, West Berkshire Council has confirmed.

The council issued a notice advising that the tree, in Castle Grove, will be felled as it is badly decayed, but that a ‘stack’ of four to five metres would be left behind.

But local resident John Foster questioned this decision.

He said: “The base of the tree is already very badly maintained and is surrounded by an untidy tangle of undergrowth.

“When the tree is inevitably felled, will this untidy tangle of undergrowth be properly maintained?

“It will not add significantly to any ‘wildlife interest’ already provided by the other trees in the immediate vicinity.

“If it is left as it is, together with the remaining rotten stump, it will continue to be an eyesore.”

However, in a statement, West Berkshire Council said: “This tree is now hollow and top heavy so in the interests of safety we've arranged for our contractor to reduce the tree.”

The council added: “The trunk will still have a significant value to local wildlife and which is why the hollow trunk will be kept.”
