Tribute to grandmother in midnight mountain hike
On July 5, Newbury resident Suzanne Bright set off up the British Isles’ highest mountain, Ben Nevis, in memory of her late grandmother Mary Bright.
Along with her friend Catherine Jones, they were among a 200-strong group who embarked on the feat, each raising funds for different charities.
Equipped with head torches and hiking sticks, the group set off at 10.30pm, and set foot back at ground level at 8.30am the following morning.
Miss Bright said this week: “It was definitely a challenge.
“The paths were un-even and rocky, and as it started to get dark we could only see via our head torches and glow sticks that were attached to our back packs.
“It felt like ages before I made the halfway point.
“At the three-quarter point there was snow. That was draining, I kept slipping on the ice and was fighting against the wind and rain.
“Relief set in when I reached the top at about 2.45am on Sunday.
“It was pitch black and foggy - I couldn’t see a thing and the downward trek felt a lot harder on my body.
“A both physically and mentally draining experience, but I feel so proud for doing it and raising just over £360 for Alzheimer’s Society.”
