Tributes to CAMRA stalwart

Clive Stevens, who lived in Hungerford for many years before moving to Ecchinswell, was also a member of Aldworth Mummers, for whom he played Doctor between 1979 and 2010.
Mr Stevens died on November 16 and his funeral was held at Thatcham Crematorium on Wednesday, December 12.
Lovers of local ale will be reminded of him every time they quaff a West Berkshire Brewery pint - for he designed the iconic beer pump labels including Good Old Boy, Mr Chubbs Lunchtime Bitter and Maggs' Mild.
Brewery co-founder Helen Maggs said: “I hope our regular beer pump clips are a fitting memorial to his skill as an artist.”
Mr Stevens also worked for short spells in the Pot Kiln at Frilsham and the Royal Oak, Ecchinswell.
He worked as a logistics controller and served for many years on the CAMRA West Berkshire branch committee, including stints as chairman, membership secretary and pubs officer.
CAMRA Regional Director John Buckley said: “I first met Clive in the 1990s when campaigning to keep some of our rural pubs open.
“He was passionate about saving the village pub and in its importance as part of the social fabric of a community. His enthusiasm for the traditional public house will be missed and Wessex CAMRA sends its condolences to his wife Joanna and his family.”
West Berkshire Branch secretary Mike Avery said: “Clive was an extremely enthusiastic and effective branch chairman. His ability to enthuse members and his dedication to campaigning on behalf of CAMRA were boundless.”
Mr Stevens was also a regular contributor to Ullage, the branch newsletter.
Another love of Mr Stevens’ life was music.
An obituary in the online magazine Musical Traditions recalled that he used to organise the Downs Festival of Traditional Singing between 1978 and 1990 and the short-lived Tradition Club in Newbury between 1979 and 1980.
It noted that his “knowledge and appreciation of traditional music (and, perhaps, one should add, beer) from all over the British Isles was second to none.”
