Tributes to former mayor of Newbury
Mrs Goodfellow (pictured right in 1986) was born in York in 1922 and, after a period in Canada, retired to England in 1965, settling in Newbury following the death of her husband, army officer Hodgson Goodfellow, and her parents.
She lived in Wenden Road and worked part-time in Newbury library for a number of years, while balancing a political career as a Newbury district councillor from 1983.
She became mayor of Newbury in 1985, taking over from fellow St John’s ward Conservative member, Newbury town councillor Ieuan Tuck. After leaving Newbury, she moved to Marlborough.
Mr Tuck, who still represents the ward, said that she was a very driven woman who was popular among her constituents.
“She always wanted the best for Newbury and if she put her mind to something, she often achieved it,” he said.
She died at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, on Saturday, May 12.
A service of thanksgiving will be held at St Michael and All Angels, Enborne, on Friday, June 15, at 2pm, followed by a reception at The Craven Arms, Enborne.
