Tributes to Steven Huntley

Steven Huntley's friends and family have expressed their shock after his sudden death in a motorcycle accident

THE partner of Newbury businessman Steven Huntley, who died in a motorcycle accident in Great Shefford on Friday (March 11), has paid tribute to him.

Louise Purton released a statement today (Thursday), saying: “Steve was mad about motorbikes and cars and would love to tinker, polish and ride or drive them. He could always be found in his garage at home tinkering away, with his boys assisting.

“Steve lived a full and exiting life and packed more into his 47 years than many of us pack into a life time.”

She also said he would be dearly missed. “He was our beloved father, soul mate, brother, uncle, son and husband and has left a gaping hole in our lives and indeed in the lives of many friends and colleagues.

“His family, especially his five children, were his world and there was nothing he wouldn't do for them. He was a source of knowledge, which he used to help and support his children in so many ways.

“Steve was mad about motorbikes and cars and would love to tinker, polish and ride or drive them. He could always be found in his garage at home tinkering away, with his boys assisting.”

Mr Huntley, a major shareholder in the Newbury-based Swift group of companies, died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on the Newbury Road at East Shefford, Hungerford, at about 6.36pm on Friday.

Police spokeswoman Victoria Brandon said shortly afterwards: “A green Kawasaki motorcycle was involved in a collision where the rider, a 47-year-old man, died at the scene.

“A 39-year-old man, who was riding a Yamaha motorcycle at the location when the collision occurred, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and taken to Newbury police station.”

Speaking of Mr Huntley's work at Swift, Ms Purton said in her statement today: “Steve was an impressive and bold business man who dedicated 22 years of his life to building his business, Swift Courier, from his garden shed into what it is today - a vast courier, transport and logistics group of companies.

“His generosity knew no bounds! Steve sponsored numerous local charities such as the (West Berkshire) Rapid Response Car (Fund), Mobility Scooters for the local hospital, the Christmas Children's Appeal and many other local events.”

The family has expressed their thanks for messages, cards and calls, but have requested that their privacy be respected.

Tributes to Mr Huntley, including one from the Swift team and one signed “your little girl Zoe and Callum”, were placed in this week's Newbury Weekly News.

The 39-year-old man who was arrested has been bailed until May 3.

Police are asking that any witnesses to the incident on Friday, March 11 contact them on 0845 8 505 505.
