Tutti Day is one for the ladies this year

Constable of the Town and Manor of Hungerford, Susan Hofgartner, said: “Many women are principals this year; there’s myself, then the speaker at the lunch will be a lady and the Tutti men this year are also both ladies - Helen Jones and Eileen Bowyer. Also the two people making the toasts to the commoners and trustees will be women this year.”
Even one of the two ale tasters is female - Jim Smith and Fiona Hobson have the role for 2014. And the Commoner’s Lunch is set to be a particularly splendid affair. Mrs Hofgartner said: “It’s the biggest we’ve ever had, with 189 people sitting down to traditional roast beef from the cows on the common.” Hungerford is believed to be the only place still to celebrate this ancient tradition.
