Tweet us where police copter is say residents
Other police helicopter services across the country keep up a constant stream of tweets telling the public why their sleep has been disturbed.
In London cops in the clouds let people know the time, location and nature of the incident.
Under the National Police Air Service the main helicopter that serves the Thames Valley is based at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, but Redhill and Boreham also share the rota.
Although the helicopter has been dispatched multiple times @NPAS_Benson has never sent out a tweet.
The call comes after a police helicopter was seen circling Newbury on two separate occasions on Monday evening, with Newburians tweeting that it had been sighted over Greenham, Parkway and the Kennet Centre.
The lack of transparency has been highlighted by Newbury resident, Paul Walter, who said “yet again, the police helicopter has been hovering over Newbury and we, the public, have no clue why. If we lived in other places across the country, such as London, we would be fully updated via Twitter.
“Given that the deployment of the helicopter can be quite frightening for local residents, this lack of simple communication is scandalous.”
But public calls to try and find out what was occurring in the town centre - and questions from the Newbury Weekly News - to ascertain what had caused the chopper to be dispatched went unanswered as there was no record on police logs.
In response to the lack of information of the choppers whereabouts, the police and crime commissioner for the Thames Valley, Anthony Stansfeld, said: “I think it’s quite reasonable that the police should tweet when they are out.”
Mr Stansfeld, who also sits on the NPAS board, said that the service had only been formed recently and “needed a bit of time” but said that he would make sure the issue was raised.
He added that the helicopter had been searching for a missing person over his home village of Kintbury about 10 days ago. “It is noisy but it’s always for a very good reason,” he said.
