Twenty is plenty for West Berkshire roads as consultation is launched

A total of 28 roads have been earmarked for the slow-down, among them Albert Road, Highfield Avenue, Park Way and Northbrook Street, while parts of Bartholomew Street, Bear Lane and Strawberry Hill could also be affected.
The chairman of the speed limit review working group, Graham Pask (Con, Bucklebury) said the review of the current speed limits in parts of the town was necessary for the safety of local residents, road users and pedestrians.
He said: “We are not going over the top with this.
“Some towns have got blanket 20 (miles per hour speed zones) everywhere - we are doing 20 in areas where there are considerable pedestrian movements.
“There is a lot of public opinion out there that says in really built up areas and towns it just keeps traffic levels that little bit lower and makes life considerably safer for pedestrians moving around.
“We firmly believe that drivers should be able to drive safely according to the road.
“It would make it a more pleasant environment for everybody.”
The council has launched a public consultation into the changes, and Mr Pask is encouraging members of the public to get involved in the process.
“We welcome all views from all people who use and live on these roads,” he said.
