Two arrested in Thatcham immigration raid
Staff were questioned to check if they had the right to be in the UK when officers visited Szechuan Inn, High Street, on Tuesday lunchtime.
Officers arrested a 22-year-old, who was transferred to an immigration detention centre, pending expulsion from the country, and a 35-year-old was placed on immigration bail while his case was investigated.
The business was served a notice warning that a civil penalty of up to £10,000 per illegal worker found would be imposed unless proof was provided that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out.
The Home Office said that it was acting on intelligence.
The incident at the restaurant sent the rumour mill into overdrive on Facebook.
The Newbury and Thatcham Berkshire Facebook page said on Tuesday that the restaurant had been closed.
However, when the Newbury Weekly News visited on Wednesday, the restaurant was open, and the manager, Chi Yeung, said that it intended to continue trading.
