Two charities sought to fill community chest spaces on Newbury's upcoming Monopoly game

Two Newbury charities are being sought to feature on the official Monopoly: Newbury Edition game that will be coming out later this year.

The two chosen charities will each get to star on their very own Community Chest spaces.

They will be joined by more than 30 other local landmarks, such as the racecourse, Town Hall and Greenham Common, which will make up the property spaces on the rest of the board. The Newbury Weekly News will be on the Fleet Street space.

Newbury mayor Gary Norman said: “I’m delighted that the Monopoly team have decided to recognise two local charities on the board.

“Newbury has more than its share of wonderful people who give up their time to volunteer.

“As mayor, I come into contact with most of the local charities, all of which provide a valuable service. Picking the winner is going to be a difficult job.”

When Monopoly: Newbury Edition was officially announced last month, Newbury residents were invited to send in general suggestions for landmarks and organisations to feature in the game.

Lines for these general suggestion are now closed, but they are re-open again so that the public can put forward suggestions for worthy charities to feature on the board.

To qualify and be in the running to be selected, the charities have to be Newbury focused and be official charities. Charities can put forward themselves as well.

To nominate a charity, either visit the official Newbury Monopoly Facebook page or email a suggestion to newbury@winningmoves.co.uk. Nominations close just before midnight on April 24.

London-based games company Winning Moves is producing the game under licence from global branded entertainment leader Hasbro.

Winning Moves custom games executive John Keen-Tomlinson said: “We would like to formally thank each and every person who has sent in nominations and as our way of a thank you, two Newbury charities will now get to star in the game.

“We feel that charities getting to feature on two of the game’s Community Chest spaces is a great fit, bearing in mind the ‘community’ aspect of these unique Monopoly features.”
