Two drivers die after vehicle is seen travelling in the wrong direction on M4
The incident occurred at 10.34pm on Saturday between junction 13 and 14 on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway.
Police say two vehicles, a blue Mazda 323 and a blue Volkswagen Passat were involved in the accident.
Thames Valley Police believe that one of the vehicles was travelling in the wrong direction.
The driver of the Mazda, an 82-year-old man from Swindon, was pronounced dead at the scene and an elderly woman passenger from the vehicle is in a critical condition at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.
The driver of the Passat, a 48 year-old man from Swindon, was also taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital where he died shortly before 5am.
No-one else was in that vehicle at the time.
Sgt Dick Thorpe, who is leading the investigation, said: “At this stage we are investigating the possibility that one of the vehicles was travelling in the wrong direction against the flow of the eastbound traffic.
“I am keen to hear from anyone who was on the M4 at this time and witnessed the collision, or saw a vehicle travelling in the wrong direction.”
