Two Newbury women cut off hair for Cancer Research
TWO Newbury women have had a close shave – by cutting off their locks to raise funds for charities.
Janet Cook and Sian Makepeace, who both work full-time at the Tesco superstore in Pinchington Lane, raised more than £2,000 for the Peter Andre Foundation, which benefits Cancer Research UK.
The pair, who have both lost relatives to the disease, collected a further £75 for the store’s chosen charity, Diabetes UK, through customer and staff donations on the day.
Ms Cook said: ”I lost my aunty to cancer almost three years ago and it was lovely to do something in her memory. Sian is like my sister, so to do it alongside her made it a lot easier.
“It was a bit embarrassing at first, but I’ve got used to my short hair now.”
Mrs Makepeace, who is the manager of the store, said: “My mother-in-law died almost a year ago to the day and I wanted to do something for her.
“My family keep saying they are really proud of me and that makes me feel good about myself. I am glad we could do something to help. It was lovely to be able to do something alongside Janet.
“I am very proud of her. She loves her hair so to do that was a huge thing.
“There were a lot of staff and customers watching and supporting us.”
