Two people injured in Hungerford Tesco store collision

Store evacuated due to structural damage

TWO people were injured and a Hungerford store was structurally damaged, following an incident this evening (Thursday).

The drama happened at the Tesco store around 5pm.

The store was evacuated, and a large crack was plainly visible to the brick store front.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “We were called shortly before 5pm today following reports of a car colliding with several other vehicles as well as the wall of the Tesco store in Everland Road.

“Our officers and other emergency services are currently at the scene.”

South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) spokesperson, David Gallagher, said they were called at 4.50pm and sent a rapid response vehicle and two ambulances to the scene.

An elderly man with chest pains and elderly woman with chest and abdominal pain and a neck injury were taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Two pumps from Newbury fire station, together with a heavy rescue unit from Reading, were called to the collision at 5pm.

On arrival, firefighters found two cars and a minibus had been involved in a collision.

One of the cars had crashed into the brickwork at the front of the store.

Two elderly people in the car were injured and firefighters cut out an elderly woman from the vehicle due to the nature of her back injury and to ease her removal from the car.

A nurse who had been shopping in the store stopped to help at the scene.

Firefighters at the scene said a significant crack in the building was afterwards noticeable from floor to roof, with the brickwork leaning outwards.

Firefighters threw a cordon around the immediate area during the incident and left the scene at 6.30pm.

Tesco issued the following statement on Friday:

"Police are investigating the incident at our Hungerford store and we are supporting them with their enquiries. Our thoughts and best wishes are with those involved in the incident."

Tesco spokesman, Alec Brown, also confirmed the building had been assessed by the store's maintenance team and to ensure it was structurally safe.

The store was closed on Thursday evening but was re-opened the following day (Friday).
