Two people taken to hospital after fire in West Berkshire
Emergency services with called to the ground floor flat in Red Cottage Drive, Calcot, at about 1.15am today (Monday).
A man and a woman and two toddlers escaped the fire, with three nearby flats also evacuated because of the smoke.
Firefighters treated the family for smoke inhalation at the scene before an ambulance crew arrived.
Two fire crews from Dee Road, Tilehurst, and Whitely Wood, Reading, remained at the scene for about an hour and used one hose reel to extinguish the blaze.
Station manager at Dee Road, Neil Watson said the family’s smoke detector alerted them to the blaze.
“On arrival, crews saw smoke coming from the property and when they went inside to fight the fire, the entire flat was full of acrid smoke. We believe the fire started in a tumble dryer while the family was asleep. Luckily, they had two working smoke detectors and the family dog started barking and they were woken up and managed to get outside to safety.
“Crews gave oxygen to one lady at the scene and two people were taken to hospital by ambulance suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation. This was a very clear illustration of the fact that having working smoke detectors in your home can save your life,” he added.
Firefighters also used a ventilation machine to to clear smoke from the premises.
Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service advises people not to leave a tumble dryer on when they go to bed and to ensure that lint is removed regularly from the filter to avoid a build up.
