Two teens arrested in connection with Burghclere school blaze
These dramatic pictures show the moment the blaze spread through the sports hall at the Clere School.
A total of 30 firefighters were called to the blaze at 1.52pm, which stared in a storage room, next to the sports hall at the Adbury Road school.
The fire spread to the sports hall, damaging the roof and the recently installed solar panels on it.
The photographs were taken by two pupils who described seeing black smoke and flames coming out of the top and side of the sports hall.
Station manager Dave Graham, who was in charge of the incident, said: “The school was brilliant at evacuating the children in good time and crews worked hard under challenging conditions, hindered by the solar panels, to keep the fire from entering the sports hall and stop what could have been 100 per cent damage to the property.
"Basingstoke City Council acted quickly to send a structural engineer to the scene, enabling us to carry out an aggressive attack on the fire.”
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
All pupils were sent home on Wednesday when the fire started but the school re-opened as normal yesterday (Thurs) morning.
Headteacher at the school, Felicity Martin, said: “The fire broke out at about 1.25pm on Wednesday, November 7, near the sports hall at the school.
“It was quickly extinguished by fire-fighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.
“Pupils and staff responded extremely effectively and appropriate procedures and drills ensured the safety of all on site.
“Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and officers are now working with colleagues from HFRS to determine the cause of the fire.”
A 15-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy have been arrested in connection with this incident and are currently in police custody.
