Ugandan teacher receives donation from Newtown school
Ugandan teacher, Andrew Mugabi, Head of English at St Michael’s Girls School, in Uganda recently visited the independent Horris Hill prep school for boys - which supports the Ugandan school - and where he gave pupils an insight into Ugandan life.
His first time out of Uganda, he did some Ugandan drumming with pupils, as well as learning some French and Latin.
Pupils then presented a cheque to Mr Mugabi, the proceeds of a ten mile sponsored walk last year, which the entire school participated in, raising a total of £5,322.
Headmaster of Horris Hill, Giles Tollit, said: “It has been fascinating to hear his observations on Horris Hill life, as well as see him teaching the boys, and his heartfelt words of thanks in assembly, on receipt of the cheque from the sponsored walk, were very moving indeed.”
The visit proved a culture shock for Mr Mugabi, including the class sizes, after he joined a class numbering five pupils, as in Uganda he is used to having over 100 pupils in one class.
The visit was arranged by the charity, Friends of St Michael’s, which supports the school in Uganda and followed a Ugandan day at the Newtown school, where pupils spent the day fetching water from the nearby stream to hand wash their clothes; used chalk boards in lessons and had rice and beans for lunch.
