UKIP leader in Newbury today (Friday)

Nigel Farage, who wants Britain to sever ties with the EU, will be answering questions from members of the public

FAST-talking UKIP leader Nigel Farage is dropping in to Newbury today (Friday) to answer public questions, and he told Newburytoday.co.uk the eurozone's financial meltdown was a clear indicator that Britain needs to sever ties with the EU immediately.

“The whole thing is a mess, we can't change anything and action needs to be taken now,” he said.

“Europe is a monster, and the French and German governments are acting horrendously. They disposed the Italian Government, and countries like Portugal and Greece should never have been allowed to enter in the first place as they are dragging everyone down with them.

“The sooner we get out of it the better shape this country will be in.”

Mr Farage, UKIP MEP for the South East of England, denied his party was anti-European, and said that Britain did have a future of dealing with the eurozone, but from a removed platform with would protect it from the knock-on effects of the kind of debt crisis currently grabbing headlines.

“I see the UK as having a trading relationship similar to that which the Swiss enjoy, and the sooner we have a referendum on this the better,” he said.

“We are not anti-European, we are against those career politicians in the British Parliament who aren't committed to change.

“Newbury is one of those areas that has flip flopped in recent years and I am here to show people that there is an alternative.

“It doesn't matter who you vote for here, nothing changes, it doesn't make a blind bit of difference.”

Mr Farage has in recent years tried to change the face of a party seen as something of a protest vote and said he is finally starting to see UKIP breaking through in pockets across the country.

“When we first came out people weren't sure of us and they did think we were a bit extremist but now they know us better and we are growing quickly and have become the fastest growing party in the country,” he said.

“UKIP is fast emerging as the genuine alternative for people in Newbury, the town is a big part of my roadshow and I hope everyone will come out and ask questions.”

He said the event, which starts at 7.30pm in St George's Church in Andover Road, was open to anyone.

“All we ask is that people behave. Whether you agree with us or not you can come down and find a bit more about what we are about. We will have people from right across the spectrum there.”
