Do you know who this wedding couple are? Old photos uncover a love story trapped in a camera for 70 years
Camera enthusiast Mark Merryweather took a gamble on an undeveloped film roll from the 1950s and uncovered a beautiful love story, writes Bethany Sirianni.
Having taken on an interest in film photography just six months ago, Mr Merryweather has turned his interest into a committed hobby.
From his first build-your-own film camera from Waterstones to now owning 45 cameras, it’s safe to say he is enthralled by it.
Mr Merryweather picked up a Kodak Brownie 127 from the Hungerford Arcade and was delighted to find an old roll of film.
He set about developing the roll at home; a process he undertakes with no chemicals involved.
However, he had his doubts.
Firstly, the roll was rather old and, secondly, his process helps develop black and white pictures but this roll was colour.
Using a process called caffenol to replace the developer, Mr Merryweather used instant coffee along with other ingredients to bring the film to life because for him, it is the “whole creation” that makes it so enjoyable.
To his surprise, three images emerged and depicted a wedding.
Mr Merryweather told Newburytoday: “I’m usually a stoic person but I must admit I had goosebumps.
“I was so proud of them I showed my mum, my sisters and of course my wife.”
The camera, released in 1952, and the cars within the photos suggest they were most likely to have been taken in the mid- to late-1950s.
The film roll would have been able to produce eight images, so Mr Merryweather was delighted to have found three photos, a result he doesn’t always get, even with newer film and cameras.
He would now love to reconnect the images with their rightful owners.
If you think you may know this couple or anything about the wedding and its location, we would love to hear more.
